This article serves both as a conclusion to the Colors of Love series and the beginning of the new “Promises” series. It reflects on the individual color posts and ties them together with a bow, if you will – specifically, the rainbow. Likewise, the rainbow is a beautiful start to a deeper dive into some of God’s promises.
Forming the Emotional Rainbow
In the Colors of Love series, we looked at numerous emotions that are experienced in love and limerence. If we rearrange the order of colors and put them all together, we see the rainbow and then some. God has indeed made our lives colorful in every way: visibly, emotionally, mentally and even spiritually.
Visibly in the limited spectrum of light we can see and emotionally in the feelings associated with certain colors. Mentally in the various ways our minds process information and life events and spiritually in the ways God reveals Himself to us individually by His Spirit.
While the colors often blur together into an indiscernible shade when we are downcast and desperate, God provides clarity. As He makes His all-knowing perspective known to us, the lines between the different colors become clear once again. (2 Corinthians 4:6)
A haze of red in buried anger and green in envy becomes a fiery passion for loving our Savior and contentment in His hands. (Romans 12:11-12) The blue in loneliness and fear in yellow turn into faithful service and peace that transcends human understanding. (Philippians 4:7)
This takes time, though, especially for broken hearts like ours, so be sure to give yourself grace as His work takes place. Keep taking one step toward Jesus at a time and you will see that rainbow, bright and clear, as He has promised.
The Rainbow Today
Research has shown that rainbow colors are attractive to babies and young children. This is why most baby books and toys feature these bright colors. One question I have about this is why the colors are so attractive to them. Without having conducted any specific research on the subject, it occurs to me that the youngest minds are naturally drawn toward colors. Perhaps, it helps them understand what is most beautiful in the world. This includes rainbows, flowers, butterflies and anything else in creation that is brightly colored.
The rainbow has always meant a lot to me personally. Once on the way home from a soccer game, I was deeply sad about my state of unrequited love. It was a cloudy day and whether we had won the game or not, my emotions would have matched. Then I looked out the car window and there was a rainbow! I silently thanked God for that beautiful, much-needed reminder that He keeps His promises.
In recent decades, the rainbow has come to be associated with the LGBTQ+ Pride movement. Some readers who visit the Lord Over Limerence website may be struggling with homosexual limerence. As a Bible-believing community, if this describes you, we welcome you and pray you find our ministry helpful.
We are also obligated to speak the truth in love (Eph. 4:15). Therefore, we must be clear that we believe the pride movement is not a proper use of the rainbow. The rainbow is not about human pride, but it has everything to do with God’s promises.
The First Rainbow
After the Great Flood, God promises His servant Noah and Noah’s family that He will never flood the whole earth again. This is where the first rainbow appears. In Genesis 9:13 God declares, “Behold, I have put my bow in the clouds.” Imagine how bright and beautiful that rainbow must have been after the entire earth had been underwater. Someday God will show us the even more amazing rainbow that surrounds Him in Heaven (Revelation 4:3).
Since Noah’s family of eight made up the whole of living mankind after the flood, it was a new beginning. God gave fallen humanity a chance to start anew with people who loved and followed Him. Disaster had struck; a long storm had passed and an even longer wait for the aftermath to settle was upon them. But He chose them to continue His work on the earth.
Rainbow in Limerence
In the same way, the storm of limerence is an opportunity to start anew. To cling to Jesus as the only one who can keep us safe from the chaos and confusion and give us hope in the aftermath. He has chosen us for important work that could only be accomplished through our unique, heartbreaking, lifechanging experience.
Until His work in us is finished, He will not stop because He loves us and those He wants to reach through us. (Philippians 1:6) The hope this provides is like the rainbow that reminds us of God’s faithfulness. Let it give you strength to keep trusting Him day by day.
PROMISES Acronym
In closing I would like to share a phrase God brought to my heart to expand the acronym PROMISES. The acronym stands for “Punctual Reminders of My Infinite Savior’s Everlasting Sufficiency.” This fits well into the oft-repeated truth that “God’s PROMISES are always true.” Then the full phrase becomes, “God’s Punctual Reminders of My Infinite Savior’s Everlasting Sufficiency are always true.”
Indeed, God’s promises are always true. We can trust Him to keep them no matter what happens in our lives. And when we see the rainbow we are encouraged because He is with us and remembers His own promises too.
